In Loving Memory of Jim Powell
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Powell on June 11, 2025, at the age of 85.
Jim was born in Calgary on September 28, 1939, and spent much of his early life in Ralston, Alberta, where he and his cousin Bob Tate happily roamed the prairie. He attended Medicine Hat High School before returning to Calgary, where he would leave a lasting mark on the city's recreational and cultural landscape.
Jim began his remarkable career at The Glencoe Club in 1963 as Assistant Badminton Professional and, through decades of dedicated service and visionary leadership, retired in 2004 as Chief Executive Officer. Among his many accomplishments, Jim played a pivotal role in the development and opening of the Glencoe Golf & Country Club in 1984—a legacy that continues to benefit generations of members.
Following his retirement, Jim continued to give back, serving as interim CEO of Heritage Park and volunteering for many years with the Calgary Aerospace Museum and the Air Force Wing of The Military Museums.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Penny Powell (née Sadler), and his three sons: Mike (Terry), Dan (Karen), and Doug (Kim). He was a proud grandfather to Connor, Rebecca (Alex), Alyssa (Calvin), Jenna (Bowden), Jordan, and Cameron, and great-grandfather to Hudson, Nixon, Oakley, Booker, and Jojo. He was predeceased by his mother, Margaret Powell (née Farmer), and his stepfather, Frank Powell.
A passionate badminton player, coach, and mentor, Jim was recognized as a Life Member of Badminton Alberta and was inducted into the Badminton Canada Hall of Fame. Jim and his doubles partner Channarong travelled extensively to compete in badminton tournaments and won many senior titles in Canada and the United States as well as a world championship in Australia. His dedication to sport, community, and leadership earned him many other accolades, including:
- Alberta Recreation Club Manager of the Year (1987, Canadian Society of Club Managers)
- Golf Club Manager of the Year (1992, ScoreGolf Magazine)
- Honorary Life Member, Club Management Association of Canada
- National Volunteer of the Year (2020, Canadian Forces Museums)
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the compassionate teams at Chinook Intercare and Bethany Riverview for the exceptional care Jim received during his long illness.
